"When You Want it done right...
We often get calls about spa repairs, and are able to help solve the problem over the phone. That might not make us rich, but it does make people happy not to have to pay a service call! So I thought that I might use a little space here to talk about the things the average homeowner can (and possibly should ) do before calling a repairman, and what questions the technician may have when you do call. Our goal is to help you get the most from your spa. We can be more helpful, and reach that goal more quickly, if you'll help us!
( For the purposes of this article, spa and hot tub are interchangeable.)
When calling any repairman, whether it is for the refrigerator or the spa, it is helpful if you know the brand, model, approximate age, type of controller, etc. If you just need a little advice the very best technician can't help you if he doesn't know what you're working on!
If you are going to need to hire a pool or spa repairman, please...Leave It Alone! The symptoms the spa had when the problem occurred help the technician to determine the root cause of the malfunction. Anything done to the spa changes the equation. Being able to accurately describe the problem is helpful, but if you don't know, don't guess.
If you have already used a competent, trustworthy service technician, continue to use that tech, because (he) already knows the history, and will appreciate your loyalty.
Let me first say that some spa and hot tub repairs are best left to the professionals, so if you have no clue what you're doing, please do one of the following: Thoroughly educate yourself on the task at hand before you lay a hand on it, or leave it alone, and have it repaired by someone who has become knowledgeable and skilled in spa and hot tub repair. Some spa and hot tub repairs, electrical repairs, in particular, can injure or kill people, or can have disastrous results for the spa. There are no shortcuts.
Proper maintenance plays an important role in the likelihood of a spa breaking down. One common call that we get is that the spa won't heat. We ask a few questions, and often find that it is really not a repair problem, but a maintenance problem. Virtually all modern era spas have a sensor, either a pressure switch, a flow switch, or thermal variance sensors that will not allow the heater to come on if there is insufficient water flow. One of the main causes for low water flow is a dirty filter. The owner simply cleans the filter, and the problem is solved, for pennies worth of water.
Another reason that a spa might not heat is that most modern spas have timers. Usually, regardless of what they are called, there is a standard and economy mode. In the standard mode, the spa runs any time there is a call for heat, in addition to when the timer tells it to run. In the economy mode, it runs when the timer tells it to, and heats only during that time if heat is called for. In the winter, if the spa is in economy mode, there may not be enough time on the timer to maintain the desired temperature. The solution is to either put the spa in standard mode, or increase the timer settings. No service call, no dollars. What's The Difference?
I have often been asked, what is the difference between a Jacuzzi, a spa and a hot tub. Well, that's what I say! While the terms are often used interchangeably, Hot Tub, or as some folks say, Hottub, can mean any heated body of water used for bathing, where the emphasis is toward heat, and they may not have many (or any) powerful jets for massage. The term hot tub is commonly used to mean Spa. Generally, the term Spa refers to hot tubs which have numerous, powerful jets, and the emphasis is toward massage. Modern spas usually have groups of jets, often targeted to specific muscle groups. The term Jacuzzi actually refers to the brand name Jacuzzi, because they were the pioneers in the spa and hot tub industry. Many people also use the term Jacuzzi when referring to a whirlpool bath, as it is still a very popular brand. When someone calls for service or repair on a Jacuzzi, we always ask a few more identification questions, but other than that, What's the difference?
Pools, Spas, and Hot Tubs are more than just luxuries, they are fun, healthy, and, for some, therapeutic. More than that, they are an investment - both in money, and in quality of life! Just like an automobile, your Pool, Spa, or Hot Tub should be well maintained, clean, and properly serviced so that they can fill their purpose reliably.
A modern spa is a sophisticated, precise appliance, and should be serviced by a qualified pool and spa professional. The spa controls, circuit boards, and equipment can be damaged by inexperienced people who may try to repair it themselves, so, if you are having a problem with tour spa, call or email us to set up an appointment. Please don't tamper with the unit before consulting us, We have seasoned, Friendly spa and hot tub repair professionals. If there is a simple fix for the problem, we will tell you. If not, it is much easier to troubleshoot (diagnose) a more complicated control and equipment problem, if we can see it unaltered. Having the knowledge of an honest, trained professional pool or spa service and repair technician may actually save you money!
We do have an entire site dedicated to Spa and Hot Tub Repair, where we discuss how spas work, and how spa repair professionals might approach spa repair.
