Angie's List is a member based group where
members find and review experiences with merchants and contractors. Members pay
an annual membership fee, and are asked to leave performance reviews for any
listed businesses that they hire. Angie's List staff monitors and
sometimes edits these reviews, even calls members , directing the
conversation. The system isn't perfect, in that a member
can leave a bad (or glowing) review for a company that they did not hire, and
are sometimes influenced by the questions asked when they get an unexpected
phone call months after the fact. Evidently, they track the member's searches,
and call them to see who they hired (or didn't) and attempt to transcribe a
review. We once got a C this way, from someone who hired a competitor who
was cheaper. To me, a C is the same as an F.
Members of Epinions and other unbiased review
sites rate Angie's list themselves pretty low (currently 72 reviews
averaging 1.5 of 5 stars). Essentially, the reviews on Angie's list are
about as reliable as anywhere else, and nothing more.
Angie's list advertises that companies can't pay to be listed.
Well, that's sort of a half truth. We were listed on Angie's list without even
knowing it, until they invented and presented us our first Super Service award.
Then they started wanting to be paid. We paid $2000.00 for local "placement"
last year, mostly to say thanks for the referrals they had sent us that year.
This year they initially wanted $3600.00 to "keep us in front of their members".
We told them to stuff it. They then told us that we would not be eligible
for the Super Service Award unless we went to a third party website, and entered
the owner's personal information for a "background check". Not Going to
happen! While I am squeaky clean and have excellent credit, I am not
going to do that!
List used companies like ours, with stellar reputations, to get a foot-hold
in the Oklahoma market, but apparently placement goes to the highest bidders, so
even though we have an A rating, I would suggest that you not use Angie's
list alone in choosing a service provider!
